How it works

Read what the file says, change it, and check the result.

A PDF keeps its title, author, and dates in a small information dictionary that every reader understands, and often repeats them in an optional XMP stream of XML. This editor reads the dictionary field by field, edits it, can remove the XMP stream, and saves with pdf-lib's automatic Producer and date stamps turned off, so the download says exactly what you decided.

  1. 01

    Open a PDF

Choose one PDF up to 75 MB and 500 pages. It is read in this tab, and every document information field it carries is shown beside its page count, PDF version, file size, and whether it holds an XMP metadata stream.

  2. 02

Edit the fields, or remove them all

Change any field, add keywords as tags, and set either date with Now or a time of your choosing. Or switch to Remove all to clear the information dictionary and the document's XMP stream in one step. A before and after table shows exactly what will change.

  3. 03

    Download the verified copy

Toolkit writes only what you changed, reopens the new file, and confirms that every field reads back as planned and the page count is intact. Only then does the download start.

Built for honest output

Metadata that says what you chose, and a plain list of what it cannot reach.

Writes what you chose, nothing else

Libraries that save PDFs often stamp their own name into Producer and reset the modified date. This editor switches that off, so a field you did not touch keeps its exact original value, and Producer says what you typed or nothing at all.

A Remove all that means it

Strip mode deletes every entry in the document information dictionary, including custom keys some applications add, and removes the document-level XMP stream. Objects the change leaves unused, such as an old Info dictionary from an earlier incremental save, are dropped instead of riding along as hidden bytes.

Dates you can read

PDF dates are stored as text such as D:20260315143000+01'00'. The editor reads them, shows them in your time zone, writes new ones with your UTC offset, and shows the exact string that will be saved. A date you leave alone keeps its original zone.

Verified before download

The new file is reopened with pdf-lib and every field, the XMP stream, the custom entries, and the page count are compared with the plan. If anything differs, nothing downloads and your original stays untouched.

Clear about what stays

Metadata inside embedded images and fonts, per-page metadata streams, application editing data such as Illustrator's, names on comments, form values, bookmarks, and attachments are not edited. The workspace lists them, rather than implying the file is now clean.

Private by design

Your PDF is read and rewritten in browser memory with pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and closing or reloading the tab clears the workspace.

PDF metadata questions

Titles, authors, XMP, privacy, and what search engines do with it.

How do I edit PDF metadata?+

Open the PDF in the workspace above, change the fields you want (title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, created, or modified), and press Download. Leave a field empty to remove it. Fields you do not touch are written back exactly as they were, and the saved copy is reopened and checked before it downloads.

How do I change the title a PDF shows in the browser tab?+

Many PDF viewers, including some built into web browsers, show the document's Title field in the tab or title bar instead of the file name when a title is set. Edit the Title field here and download the copy. If the workspace reports an XMP metadata stream, some viewers, Firefox among them, read the title from it instead, so also tick Remove the XMP stream when saving. To ask desktop readers such as Adobe Acrobat to prefer the title over the file name, also turn on Show the title instead of the file name, which sets the DisplayDocTitle viewer preference. Each reader decides for itself how to use it.

How do I remove the author name from a PDF?+

Clear the Author field and download. If the workspace reports an XMP metadata stream, which often repeats the author, also tick Remove the XMP stream when saving, or switch to Remove all. Names can live elsewhere in a PDF too, for example on comments and annotations, and those are not changed by this tool.

What can PDF metadata reveal?+

More than most people expect. Author is often filled in automatically from an office account or computer name, Creator and Producer name the software and frequently its version, and the two dates show when the document was made and last saved. Custom entries can carry company names or internal references. It is worth a look before a PDF leaves your organization.

What is XMP metadata?+

XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) is a block of XML stored as a stream inside the PDF. It usually repeats the title, author, and dates from the information dictionary and can hold much more, such as rights statements, editing history, and PDF/A conformance details. This editor shows whether a document-level XMP stream exists and how large it is. Remove all deletes it. In edit mode it is kept unless you choose to remove it, because the editor does not rewrite XMP.

Why does Producer say pdf-lib or another app?+

Producer records the software that wrote the PDF. Many online PDF tools are built on the open source pdf-lib library, which writes its own name into Producer and updates the modified date by default whenever it saves. Converters, virtual printers, and office suites record their names in the same way. This editor turns that default off, so Producer ends up as whatever you type, or is left out entirely.

Does editing metadata change the content of my PDF?+

No page is redrawn, and text, images, and fonts are not recompressed or re-rendered. The file is rewritten as a whole, though, so its internal structure is reorganized and the size can change a little in either direction. As with any edit to a PDF, a digital signature becomes invalid.

Does PDF metadata matter for search engines?+

It can help. When a PDF is published on the web, search engines may use its Title field as the result title, and a clear title also helps people recognize the file in a browser tab or a downloads list. Search engines rank a PDF mainly on its text, so treat metadata as accurate labelling rather than a ranking shortcut, and do not expect the Keywords field to improve rankings.

What does Remove all leave behind?+

It removes the document information dictionary, custom entries included, and the document-level XMP stream, then drops objects that nothing references any more. Other parts of a PDF can carry identifying data too, and it does not reach them, for example metadata inside embedded images and fonts (such as EXIF in a photo), metadata streams on individual pages, application data stored as PieceInfo (such as Illustrator editing data), names on comments, form field values, bookmarks, attachments, and the file identifier. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs are rejected rather than processed.

Is my PDF uploaded?+

No. The file is read and rewritten by pdf-lib running in this browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server or stored, and the workspace is cleared when you close or reload the page.
