Word counter questions
How words are measured, how estimates work, and what happens to the text you enter.
What does the word counter count as a word?
The counter uses language-aware browser segmentation when available. Letters and numbers form words, while spaces and punctuation by themselves do not count as words.
Is my text uploaded or stored on a server?
No. Analysis happens entirely in your browser. The current draft can be saved in local browser storage so it is available when you reopen the page, but it is never sent to Toolkit.
How are reading and speaking times calculated?
Reading time uses an estimated pace of 238 words per minute, while speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Actual times vary by reader, subject, and delivery style.
Can I count only part of my text?
Yes. Highlight any passage in the editor to see a separate word and character count for that selection below the workspace.
