Expense Splitter

Track who paid, decide who shared each cost, and turn a messy group ledger into a clear settle-up plan.

Your ledger stays in this browser
How it works

One ledger, one fair result.

Record the reality of each purchase, then let the net balances remove unnecessary back-and-forth payments.

  1. 01

    Add the group

Name each person and choose the currency. The example group makes the full workflow easy to understand before you replace it with your own.

  2. 02

    Record every payment

Enter what was bought, the amount, and who paid. Open an expense to exclude people or assign weighted shares when an equal split is not fair.

  3. 03

    Settle the net balance

Toolkit offsets what everyone paid against what they fairly owe, then suggests a short list of payments you can copy or export.

Flexible enough for real groups

Split each cost on its own terms.

Different payer, different participants

Each expense can have its own payer and group. Split accommodation among everyone, tickets among two people, and fuel among only the passengers.

Equal or weighted shares

Use equal splitting for ordinary costs or share units for larger rooms, children, partial attendance, or any arrangement that should not be divided evenly.

Net settlement, clear proof

See paid, fair share, and final balance for every person. The settlement plan nets the whole ledger so people do not need to repay every purchase separately.

Expense-splitting questions

Participants, shares, cents, settlement, and privacy.

How does the expense splitter calculate balances?+

For every included expense, the payer receives credit for the full amount and each participant owes their allocated share. A person’s balance is total paid minus total owed.

Can different expenses include different people?+

Yes. Open any expense and tick only the people who shared it. This is useful when some group members skipped an activity or paid for something personal.

How do weighted shares work?+

Share units divide the amount proportionally. Someone with two shares owes twice as much as someone with one share, while the allocated amounts still add up exactly to the expense.

What happens to leftover cents?+

When an amount cannot divide evenly, Toolkit assigns leftover cents deterministically so the individual shares always total the original amount.

Is the settlement plan the only correct way to pay?+

No. It is a compact suggestion based on the final net balances. Any set of transfers that clears the same balances is equally valid.

Where is my group data stored?+

People, expenses, and settings stay in local storage in this browser. Toolkit does not upload the ledger or require an account.
