Webcam recorder workspace

Camera

Record from your webcam

Nothing opens until you press Turn on camera. Video and sound stay in this tab and are never uploaded.

Camera off

Your camera is off

Press Turn on camera and the browser will ask for the camera and the microphone. The 1080p preset is selected; the devices, size, and quality can all be changed before you record.

The preview is mirrored like a selfie view, so your right hand appears on the right. The recording is not mirrored: it plays back the way other people see you, so writing you hold up reads correctly in the file.

Format and quality

Only formats this browser says it can record are listed. Sizes are estimates at the target bitrate.

Format, quality, and countdown
QualityVideo bitrate · size a minute

Clean at 1080p for a talking head; a full hour fits under the take limit. A full 60 minutes is about 1.1 GB.

Start

Time to sit back and look at the lens. Escape cancels it.

Takes

Your recordings

Held in this tab's memory only, newest first. Download a take to keep it; reloading, closing the tab, or leaving the page discards every take.

Turn on the camera and record a take. Each one lands here with a player and a download button, and stays on this device.

Honest limits

What to know before a long recording.

Takes live in memory, not on disk

Nothing is saved until you download it. Reloading, closing the tab, or a browser crash discards every take, which is why the page asks before you leave with one not yet downloaded.

Long HD takes are large

At Standard a minute is about 18.8 MB, at Maximum about 58.6 MB. One take stops at 60 minutes or 2 GB, and all takes together at 4 GB, always keeping what was recorded.

The format depends on the browser

Chrome and Edge record WebM, and MP4 in recent versions. Firefox records WebM. Safari records MP4. The format list only offers what this browser reports it can do.

WebM may not seek in every player

Chrome writes WebM while it records and never goes back to note the length, so some players show no duration and cannot skip. VLC plays it; a remux, or MP4 where offered, avoids it.

The mirror is only on screen

The preview is mirrored by default because that is what feels natural to look at. The recording is never mirrored, so it shows you the way a viewer sees you.

The camera light means it is open

The light stays on whenever the camera is open, recording or not. Turn off camera, or leave the page, and every track is stopped so the light goes out.

How it works

A live stream in, a chunk every second, a file at the end.

The browser opens the camera and microphone as one live stream, and its built-in MediaRecorder encodes that stream in the format you chose, handing this page a chunk of the file every second. The chunks are counted against the limits as they arrive and kept in the tab's memory. When you press Stop they are joined into one file you can play back on the page and download. No encoder is downloaded and nothing leaves your device.

  1. 01

Turn on the camera and pick your devices

Press Turn on camera and allow access when the browser asks. Choose the camera, the microphone, and the size to request, or switch Record sound off for a silent clip. The preview is mirrored like a selfie view; the file will not be.

  2. 02

Choose a format and quality, then record

The format list holds only what this browser can record, and each quality preset shows its size per minute. Press Start recording, sit back during the three-second countdown, and use Pause if you need a moment without starting a new take.

  3. 03

Play the take back and download it

Press Stop and the take appears in the list with a player, its length, size, format, and resolution. Download the takes worth keeping, delete the rest, and turn the camera off so its light goes out.

What it does

A recorder that says what it is doing.

Only formats that will work

The page asks this browser about WebM with VP9 or VP8, MP4 with H.264, and plain WebM and MP4, and lists only the ones it accepts. If the chosen format still refuses to start, the next one is used and the page says which.

Sizes you can plan around

Four quality presets from 1.5 Mbps to 8 Mbps, each with its size per minute. While recording, the panel beside the preview shows the size so far, the rate actually measured, and how long you can keep going before a limit.

Countdown, pause, and resume

An optional three-second countdown, read out to screen readers and cancelled with Escape, gives you time to settle. Pause stops both the clock and the file, and Resume carries on in the same take.

Camera, microphone, and size

Choose any connected camera and microphone, request 720p up to 4K with the same presets as the Webcam Test, and see the resolution and frame rate the camera actually delivered. A level meter shows the microphone is live before you start.

Takes that stay on this device

Every take is held in this tab and listed with a player. A download gets a dated, plain file name such as webcam-recording-2026-10-03-1432.webm, and the page asks before you leave with a take you have not downloaded.

Limits stated before they bite

One take stops at 60 minutes or 2 GB, and all takes together at 4 GB. Reaching a limit stops the recording with a sentence saying which one, and everything recorded up to that point is kept.

Recording questions

Formats, memory, mirrored video, and the camera light.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?+

No. The camera and microphone stream goes into this tab, the browser's own MediaRecorder turns it into a file there, and the page makes no network request with any of it. Takes are kept in the tab's memory until you download or delete them, and they are gone when you reload, close the tab, or leave the page.

Will my recording be WebM or MP4?+

It depends on the browser, and the format list shows what yours offers. Chrome and Edge record WebM, with VP9 listed first because it gives a sharper picture per megabyte, and recent versions also offer MP4 with H.264. Firefox records WebM with VP8. Safari records MP4 with H.264 and AAC. Choose MP4 where it is offered if the file is going to an iPhone, QuickTime, PowerPoint, or an editing app; WebM is fine for the web, Chrome, Firefox, and VLC.

Why can I not skip forward in my downloaded WebM?+

Chrome writes a WebM as a stream while it records and never goes back to fill in the length, so the file has no duration in its header. Some players then show no running time and cannot seek, and QuickTime Player does not open WebM at all. VLC plays and seeks these files without trouble. To fix the file itself, run it through a converter that remuxes it, which rewrites the header without re-encoding; with ffmpeg that is a copy of the streams into a new WebM or MKV. Recording in MP4, where your browser offers it, avoids the problem.

Why is the preview mirrored but the recording is not?+

A mirrored view is what people expect when they look at themselves, so the preview is mirrored by default and the Mirror preview toggle turns it off. The recording is never mirrored: it shows you the way anyone watching sees you, so writing on a shirt or a sign you hold up reads correctly in the file even though it looks backwards in the preview.

How long can I record, and how much memory does it use?+

One take can run for up to 60 minutes or 2 GB, whichever comes first, and all takes in the tab together are capped at 4 GB. At the Standard preset a minute is about 18.8 MB, so an hour is about 1.1 GB; High is about 36.7 MB a minute and reaches 2 GB after about 56 minutes, and Maximum is about 58.6 MB a minute and reaches it after about 35 minutes. Those are targets, and a still scene usually comes in smaller. The recording is held in memory, so on a computer with 8 GB of RAM or less, download long takes as you go and close other heavy tabs.

Can I record video without sound?+

Yes. Switch Record sound off before or after turning the camera on. The microphone is then never opened, the browser does not ask for it, and the file has no audio track at all rather than a silent one. If you leave sound on but the microphone cannot be opened, the camera still starts and the page says that takes will have no sound until the microphone is fixed.

Which microphone does it use, and how do I change it?+

Unless you pick one, the browser uses your system's default input, which is not always the headset or USB microphone you meant. Once access is allowed, the Microphone list shows every input by name; choose one and the preview restarts on it, and the level meter moves when you speak so you know it is the right one. Names stay hidden until you allow access, which is a browser privacy rule.

Does it work on an iPhone, an iPad, or in Safari?+

Yes, in Safari 14.1 or later on a Mac and on iOS and iPadOS 14.5 or later, where it records MP4. Keep Safari in front and the screen on while recording: switching apps or locking the phone pauses the camera, and the take freezes or stops. The front camera opens by default, and the camera list offers the back cameras once access is allowed. A download goes to the Files app, in Downloads, from where you can save it to Photos.

Why does the camera light stay on when I am not recording?+

The light shows the camera is open, not that it is recording, and it stays on for as long as the preview is running. Press Turn off camera, or leave the page, and every track is stopped, so the light should go out within a second or two. If it stays on, another app or tab is using the camera; on a Mac, Control Center names it.

How do I get a smaller file, or a sharper one?+

The quality preset sets the size, not the resolution: each preset is a bitrate, and the file grows by that much every second whatever the size of the picture. For a smaller file choose Compact or Standard, which suit a talking head at 720p or 1080p. For a sharper one choose High or Maximum, and request 1080p or more so there is detail to spend the bits on. Good light helps both ways, because a dim picture is grainy, and grain is expensive to encode.
